Macron said the continent must work to become a pillar of peace, independence and democracy, as originally envisioned when the European project was established.
The French president urged European countries not to shut themselves within their borders and to reject hostility toward others. He also warned of the risk of nationalism returning, which, he said, could deepen divisions between the countries of the continent.
According to Macron, the response to these developments must be grounded in the values that have guided the building of European cooperation.
