Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti took part in the 22nd Conference of the European Network for Rural Development, being held in Mitrovica from September 29 to October 1. The event was organized by the International Business College Mitrovica (IBCM), in cooperation with the European Network for Rural Development.

In his speech, Kurti highlighted the importance of rural development for Kosovo. He cited fertile land, natural resources, agricultural traditions and human potential as some of the country’s advantages.
According to the prime minister, many citizens live in rural areas, while agriculture, livestock farming, food processing and small businesses in these areas provide significant income for many families.
Kurti said the government is directing investment toward agriculture and rural development, with the aim of changing the current support model. The sector, he said, should not rely primarily on land area and the number of livestock, but should focus on production, quality, increased productivity and competitiveness.
“Despite the difficulties, from structural challenges to climate change, our aim is not only to support agriculture, but to transform it,” Kurti said.
He stressed the need for investment in water and irrigation systems, soil health and infrastructure for processing and storage. These measures, he said, would give farmers the opportunity to increase the value of their products, avoiding the export of unprocessed raw materials and the import of finished products.
The head of government also described the creation of a food system based on consumer safety, fair market competition and citizens’ trust in public institutions as essential.
“A developed village and productive agriculture are prerequisites for a strong state and a sustainable economy, just as a healthy society requires a safe food system,” Kurti concluded.
