According to the indictment, the doctors negligently treated a 40-year-old patient between 28 May 2024 and 4 June 2024 in the internal medicine department. The prosecution considers that their actions led to a deterioration in the patient’s health and subsequently to her death.

The woman went to the hospital following an examination and recommendation by her primary care physician, who had suspected inflammation of the veins, specifically thrombophlebitis. However, during the initial assessment in the internal medicine department, without taking a complete medical history or conducting detailed tests, she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. After receiving treatment, the patient was sent home.

As a result, the thrombosis was not identified or diagnosed in time. The necessary treatment for the condition was also not administered, which, according to the prosecution, deprived the patient of a genuine opportunity to have the thrombotic process detected and treated in time and to prevent or limit its progression.

On 1 June 2024, because of severe abdominal pain and a worsening general condition, the patient returned to the hospital for an examination. Although she was admitted, over the following four days the attending doctors conducted no further diagnostic examinations to determine the cause of her condition or the appropriate treatment, despite abnormal laboratory and biochemical test results.

Her condition continued to deteriorate and, on the afternoon of 4 June 2024, she sought help at a private clinic in Skopje. She was admitted in serious condition. During emergency surgery, thrombosis of the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries was found, accompanied by complete gangrene of the small and large intestines. Her condition was inoperable, and the patient died on 5 June 2024, the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office said. /Telegrafi/
