Vilnius airport closed after report of suspected drone, NATO fighter jets scrambled

Lithuania was placed on high alert after a report that a drone, suspected of having entered from Belarus, had been detected in its territory.

As a security measure, authorities suspended operations at Vilnius Airport and scrambled NATO fighter jets.

The aircraft were taking part in NATO’s air patrol mission in the Baltic region and were launched after the report of the unmanned vehicle’s presence.

Details of the incident and the air force response were made public by Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre.

Meanwhile, authorities urged residents in the wider Vilnius area to remain vigilant and be prepared to seek shelter if necessary.
