Political analyst Xhavit Drenori has put forward a political solution that, in his view, would avert snap elections on the final day of the deadline for electing a new president.

His proposal includes electing Glauk Konjufca president, the government’s commitment to legal changes, appointing Andin Hoti as minister of justice, and bringing Elisa Spiropali into the government as foreign minister.

Drenori has called on the political parties to sit down for dialogue and reach an agreement, stressing that the country needs stability and functioning institutions.

According to him, the deadline for electing a new president expires today and, if this does not happen, Kosovo will automatically go to snap elections.

He assessed that the consequences of each of the possible paths are significant and that no naivety is needed to understand the seriousness of the situation.

Drenori said that no political entity would be doing the “four in The Hague” any favors if the country goes to elections, particularly the PDK.

The analyst also questioned whether, in a polarized climate marked by intense political tensions, protests and clashes that have also escalated into violence and attacks on institutions, conditions can be guaranteed for a calm, free and democratic campaign and elections.

His proposed formula begins with the election of Glauk Konjufca as president of the Republic of Kosovo.

Before taking this step, according to Drenori, Konjufca should meet with Hamza, Abdixhiku and Haradinaj, where he would guarantee that he would perform his duties in full accordance with the Constitution. He should also publicly pledge to make maximum efforts to support the four in The Hague, including lobbying international friends.

Another part of the proposal is Prime Minister Kurti’s commitment to making maximum efforts toward the necessary legal changes, including any initiative aimed at reviewing the way the Special Court operates, while also taking into account his previous public positions on the matter.

Drenori also proposes replacing the minister of justice with Andin Hoti, while Elisa Spiropali would serve as foreign minister.

In his view, such an agreement would direct political energy toward a common objective shared by many actors on Kosovo’s political scene, although different paths and means have so far been used to achieve it.

Drenori stressed that, at this moment, Kosovo may need a political agreement more than a new confrontation, in order to ensure the functioning of institutions, the country’s stability and a joint commitment to the state’s vital interests.

He concluded his message by calling for the day to serve as an opportunity for political responsibility, dialogue and agreement.
