According to the PDK, institutions and political entities must act without delay, as the situation requires decision-making in the interests of the state and the fulfillment of obligations related to the people’s struggle for freedom.
The party said that the initiative for this law was undertaken following meetings and consultations with all Albanian political parties. The PDK considers that protecting the KLA and freedom fighters is a joint responsibility of the state and that this issue transcends the interests of any political force.
The statement said that the law is directly linked to Kosovo’s past, present and future, and that its completion requires political unity and institutional responsibility toward the country.
The PDK has defined the completion of the law’s approval in two readings as an immediate priority. According to the party, the Assembly must conclude this process without further delay and respond to citizens’ demand for the dignified protection of freedom fighters.
The Democratic Party of Kosovo stressed that there is no legal or procedural obstacle to voting on the law. It added that the government’s opinion is not an obstacle either and that there is no political reason for the process not to be completed. The PDK recalled that, if the law received sufficient support in the first reading, the same will must also be demonstrated in the second reading.
The PDK warned that this national issue must not become a bargaining tool or a means of political conditioning, calling for the protection of the KLA and freedom fighters to be addressed with dignity, responsibility and decision-making.
The PDK also strongly condemned what it described as disproportionate violence carried out by the Kosovo Police against protesters. According to the party, the use of force beyond the standards for police intervention is unacceptable and must be condemned.
The PDK emphasized that protesting is the right of every citizen and that citizens may oppose the decision in The Hague, as well as demand the approval of the law in the second reading. It called on the government, the prime minister and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to immediately stop actions beyond their constitutional and legal powers, and not to incite or use the police to violently suppress the protest.
According to the PDK, no political order justifies disproportionate force, which left many citizens injured last night. The party expressed its solidarity with and full support for all protesters injured during this national cause.
The PDK said it would undertake all necessary steps and refer documented cases of violence and the abuse of authority to the Kosovo Police Inspectorate. It called for a full investigation and accountability for those responsible for ordering and carrying out these actions.
