Janevska: Improving education and linking it to the labor market are urgent reforms

Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska took part in a panel discussion on the Growth and Jobs Report prepared by the World Bank for Macedonia. The report was presented today at a meeting attended by representatives of the government, the academic community and the country’s business sector.

Responding to questions about the measures considered priorities for facilitating young people’s transition from education to employment, Janevska said that the system’s weaknesses must be addressed without delay.

“The fact that the quality of education needs major improvements is the foundation of the changes we are implementing, from primary to higher education. Our aim is to correct systemic shortcomings. Every reform is urgent, because a developing country cannot afford to lose its human potential,” the minister said.

She highlighted that the current government is investing in modernizing educational infrastructure, with 70 million euros allocated for this purpose over the past two years. At the same time, new curricula and textbooks are being prepared, while teacher motivation is expected to increase through higher salaries and expanded opportunities for professional and career development.

A career guidance program has begun to be implemented in primary education. Meanwhile, career counselors are being appointed in secondary schools to help students choose the fields in which they have the greatest aptitude and development opportunities.

Janevska also announced that some curricula already include digital skills and artificial intelligence. According to her, steps are also being taken to incorporate competencies related to the green transition.

The minister singled out dual education in vocational secondary schools as the most successful example of the education system. This model, she said, will be expanded to more schools and is expected to be applied at higher levels of education as well.

“Dual secondary education is being developed in cooperation with German and Swiss development agencies, as well as with Sweden and Austria. For these programs, employment with the employers where the education and practical training take place has been secured almost entirely. I believe that implementing the same model in higher education will produce results there as well. Meanwhile, several faculties are already rapidly cooperating with companies and sending students for practical training with potential employers,” Janevska said.
