Hamza recounts conversation with Kurti and calls for a session on the Specialist Chambers law

Kosovo Democratic Party chairman Bedri Hamza has revealed the topics discussed during his meeting with Prime Minister Albin Kurti, stressing that the adoption of amendments to the Law on the Specialist Chambers in The Hague remains a condition for any further discussions.

“It is in the country’s interest for political parties to reach an agreement so that the president can be elected and elections avoided. At the meeting, we discussed the law, the state’s support in this process and securing the necessary funding. Naturally, the issue of the president was also discussed. Our position is unequivocal: it makes no sense to meet with anyone unless the law is adopted in its second reading,” Hamza declared.

The PDK has sent Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu an official request to convene an extraordinary session today, with the aim of voting on the draft law amending the Law on the Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

During an extraordinary press conference on Tuesday, Hamza said that many signatures had been secured to initiate the session, but the number had not reached 40, which are required for it to be convened, KosovaPress reports.

According to him, the request was submitted together with the Alliance. He called on deputies from the Vetëvendosje Movement, the LDK and representatives of the non-Serb communities to support them with their signatures.

“We sent the official request and invitation to Ms. Haxhiu. So far, we have collected the signatures of a considerable number of deputies, including our entire parliamentary group and the Alliance. We invite all deputies of the Assembly, from the LVV, LDK and non-Serb communities, to sign the request for an extraordinary session. We are asking for the law to be adopted, as there is no reason for it not to pass in its second reading,” he said.

Hamza also spoke about the steps the PDK could take if the legal amendments are not adopted and the Assembly is dissolved because of the failure to elect a president.

“The PDK will act only democratically and within the law. Any form permitted by democratic rules and the legal framework will be part of our political actions. I do not want to believe that the law will not be adopted, because there is no reason for the contrary, except a lack of political will. Those who supported it yesterday should have done so seriously,” Hamza said.

The PDK leader also commented on the LDK’s decision not to participate in yesterday’s vote, in which the law on the Specialist Chambers was put to a vote for adoption in its first reading.

“Yesterday we saw that the LDK did not participate in the vote on this law. Nevertheless, we know that political entity and have many friends and close associates there. The people of Kosovo organized themselves for freedom and independence, while their war was waged through the KLA. Members of the KLA are present in all political entities, in the PDK, the Alliance, the LVV and the LDK. For this reason, I believe that this law concerns values shared by all political parties,” Hamza concluded.
