Nine people, including two children and a pregnant woman, were killed last night after a person opened fire inside a home in Pennsylvania, United States. The suspected gunman was later found dead, and initial information indicates that he may have died by suicide.
The incident began shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday, when police received a call about gunshots on Perry Street, in the eastern part of the city of Erie. According to local television station Erie News Now, officers who arrived at the scene found two women dead from gunshot wounds in the street outside the house where the armed person was located.

Witnesses said they had seen a man shooting outside the residence before going back inside. Because there was information that other people were in the house, authorities surrounded the area and requested reinforcements.
Armed with a handgun, the person suspected of carrying out the attack remained inside the building and refused to surrender. The standoff with police lasted several hours. A special SWAT team was also involved in the operation, while officers repeatedly called on him over loudspeakers to come outside. Local media reported that further gunshots were heard from inside the residence during this time.
When police managed to enter the house, they found bodies in different parts of the residence. The victims included two children and, according to reports, a pregnant woman. The suspected gunman was also found dead inside.
Erie Police Chief Rick Laura became emotional as he spoke to reporters about what officers had seen. He said that, to be honest with the community, it was one of the most horrific and heartbreaking scenes his officers and investigators had ever encountered. According to him, the number of lives lost was immense and the circumstances under investigation were deeply shocking.
Laura provided no further details about the scene inside the residence, saying he wanted to respect the victims and their families. He confirmed that the suspected gunman had died and that residents in the area were no longer in danger. The police chief also offered his prayers for the victims, their families and everyone affected, saying that words were not enough to describe the scale of the loss of life.
The identities of the victims and the suspected gunman have not yet been made public. The motive for the attack remains unknown, as does any possible connection between the armed person and the victims.
