Donald Trump has raised an unprecedented proposal: that “Trump Ocean” or the “Ocean of the Americas” be internationally recognized as the name for the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean.

In a speech to supporters in Tennessee, the U.S. president stressed that he wants the United States to have an ocean bearing its name while he is in office.
This is not the first time the proposal has come to light—Trump raised a similar idea in August. It is part of a series of initiatives aimed at changing place names, including the Gulf of Mexico, which he renamed the “Gulf of America.”
Another plan announced by Trump calls for Lake Ontario to be renamed “Lake America.”
Despite these statements, there is an important limitation: Washington does not have the authority to force other countries or international institutions to accept names for bodies of water that extend beyond national jurisdiction.
Trump’s latest proposal is part of his broader efforts to adopt names that, in his view, better reflect the identity and global weight of the United States.
