Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has reacted to the murder of Arlinda Zekaj, questioning how institutions handled cases of violence against women.
Speaking at the 64th meeting of the General Council of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Kurti said Arlinda’s case shows that following legally prescribed procedures and seeking help from institutions did not ensure her safety.

“Arlinda Zekaj’s murder has once again confronted us with a harsh truth: a woman can follow every avenue provided by law, report violence, seek protection, and even warn in writing that her life is at risk, yet still end up murdered,” Kurti said.
According to the prime minister, Arlinda had followed exactly the steps institutions recommend to women facing violence.
“Arlinda did what institutions ask women to do when they face violence,” he said.
Kurti recalled that information about the handling of the case and shortcomings in the institutional chain, including a lack of cooperation among the relevant institutions, had been made public the previous day.
He said accountability would be sought from every official who failed to fulfill their duties, including potential criminal liability.
“I reiterate that we will work to the end to ensure that every responsible official who failed to do their duty is held accountable, not only through disciplinary action but also criminal prosecution. Everyone responsible at every link in the chain must be investigated,” Kurti said.
He also stressed that negligence in carrying out one’s duties must be followed by concrete measures.
“Anyone who has neglected their work must be held accountable and will face disciplinary and criminal measures,” the prime minister concluded.
