Zajkova demands answers over failure to protect Biljana in Bogdanci

The tragedy in Bogdanci has once again drawn attention to the protection of victims of domestic violence and institutional responsibility. Monika Zajkova, president of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and a member of parliament, criticized the ruling majority, saying it missed an opportunity to prevent such tragedies in time when it rejected a proposal for electronic bracelets for abusers.

Zajkova recalled that Biljana, the victim from Bogdanci, had previously reported the violence and had been threatened with death. She called on the responsible institutions to explain how they respond when a woman reports that someone has threatened to kill her, and whether the current protection systems are effective.

According to the LDP, last year the party twice submitted a legislative proposal to introduce electronic bracelets for perpetrators of domestic violence, but the ruling majority did not support it.

The proposal provided for electronic tracking of abusers’ movements and immediate alerts to victims and relevant services if a court-issued restraining order was violated. The LDP believes this measure would lead to a faster response and greater safety for people affected by violence.

“It is essential that criminals receive harsher sentences, but that alone is not enough. Responsibility must also extend to those who had the opportunity to prevent the crime but consciously and deliberately decided that stupid excuses were enough to reject the proposal for electronic bracelets,” Zajkova said.
