Wizz Air expands its presence in Albania: Adds 15th aircraft and increases capacity to 9 million seats in 2027

Wizz Air, the leading airline in Albania, today announced that it will permanently station its 15th aircraft at its Tirana base, marking another milestone in the company’s long-term investment in the country.

The new Airbus A321neo will enable the airline to expand its route network further, offering greater flexibility and more travel options.

With this expansion, Wizz Air aims to offer 9 million seats in Albania in 2027, an 11% increase in capacity compared with 2026.

As part of its continued expansion, Wizz Air is strengthening its winter route network from Tirana. The airline will continue operating routes to Billund and Bratislava during the winter season, while its Budapest route will operate year-round.

Wizz Air is also bringing back flights to Catania and adding Palermo to its winter network, giving passengers more options for travel between Albania and major European destinations.

The airline will increase flight frequencies to six destinations in its European network: Milan Malpensa, Milan Bergamo, Berlin Brandenburg, Hamburg, Perugia and Nuremberg.

By strengthening existing routes, Wizz Air continues to respond to growing passenger demand with more convenient schedules and affordable travel options.

Over the past three years, Wizz Air has steadily increased its annual seat capacity for passengers in Albania by an average of more than one million additional seats a year. Building on that growth, the airline expects to reach another milestone by the end of 2026: carrying 30 million passengers to and from Tirana since it began operating in the country.

This expansion is part of Wizz Air’s nearly decade-long investment in Albania. Since establishing its Tirana base, the airline has played a significant role in transforming the country’s air connections, making affordable travel accessible to a growing number of passengers. It has also contributed to tourism and business development and helped strengthen ties among families and friends across Europe.

Wizz Air’s commitment to Albania extends beyond flight operations. Through the Wizz Air Pilot Academy, the airline continues to support the training of aviation professionals. Its partnerships with the Albanian Football Federation and the Tirana Marathon also demonstrate its growing commitment to local communities and sporting initiatives.

Samuel Ferrera Falcon, Network Officer West at Wizz Air, said:

“Stationing our 15th aircraft in Tirana from next summer is a milestone we are particularly proud of and clear evidence of our confidence in Albania’s long-term potential. Since our first flight from Tirana in 2017, Wizz Air has grown to become Albania’s leading airline, carrying one in every two passengers at Tirana International Airport on 62 routes to 20 countries. It is gratifying to see how we have helped make travel across Europe more accessible to millions of people, carrying 7 million passengers this year alone.

With 9 million seats on offer in 2027, 11% more than this year, and thanks to our new aircraft, we will continue bringing people, families and businesses closer together, making Wizz Air the first choice for Albanian travelers. Albania has been an important part of our growth story, and we are excited to continue this journey together.”

Piervittorio Farabbi, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Tirana International Airport, said:

“Our partnership with Wizz Air has been one of the main drivers of Tirana International Airport’s growth and the expansion of Albania’s air connections with Europe. Since 2017, we have welcomed more than 27 million Wizz Air passengers.

Kastrati Group’s continued investments have played a key role in supporting this growth through the construction of new aircraft parking stands, the renovation and construction of taxiways, and ongoing improvements to airport and terminal infrastructure. These investments aim to increase operational capacity, improve efficiency and support the further development of Albania’s air connections.

The addition of the 15th aircraft to the Tirana base in 2027 marks another milestone, making Tirana Wizz Air’s sixth-largest base in its network.”

In 2026, Wizz Air is offering 8.2 million seats on flights to and from Albania, currently connecting the country to 20 countries through 62 routes. So far this year, the airline has operated around 30,000 flights carrying 7 million passengers, demonstrating the scale of its operations and the strong demand for affordable air travel.
