Agron Llapushi, 49, was found hanging by a rope in the showers at Reç prison, where he was serving his sentence. He had taken his own life.

Llapushi, a resident of Çekin in Gramsh, was convicted of killing his wife, Alketa Llapushi, in 2015. According to testimony at the time, he had recently returned from Greece, where he had been living as an emigrant, and strangled his wife after a dispute over a plot of land in Gramsh. After the killing, Llapushi turned himself in to police and admitted to the crime.
Agron and Alketa Llapushi had two children. While serving his sentence, he had limited contact with his family, receiving only two visits, in 2023 and 2025.
Prosecutors had sought a life sentence. However, Llapushi was found guilty and sentenced to 24 years and 4 months in prison for “murder due to family relations.” The verdict became final on December 10, 2015.
In statements made after the killing, he said his family was facing financial difficulties and that he had been going through a psychologically difficult period. A forensic psychiatric examination was also conducted to assess his mental state. It concluded that he did not have any psychological or neuropsychological disorders.
