The first round of the presidential election will be held next Sunday in a climate of sharp polarization. Also yesterday, the televised debate among the candidates on TV Globo was canceled, after neither President Lula nor Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, agreed to take part.
The Datafolha results give Lula 48% of the vote in the second round, while his main rival gets 45%.
Brazil’s legislation and Constitution provide for a runoff between the two candidates with the most votes if neither of them secures more than 50% of the vote in the first round.
The previous poll, repeated last Thursday, had Lula at 47% and Senator Bolsonaro at 45% in the second round. Taking into account the margin of error of ±2%, the results technically implied a tie between the two main contenders.
