In response to a question from Kosovo Press, Haradinaj said he considered it an honor to have the opportunity to vote in favor of dissolving the Special Court.
“I have been a deputy, and I would have felt greatly honored if I had had the opportunity. Personally, I see this as a historic moment in a deputy’s life to vote today in favor of dissolving the Special Court, and in this case, amending the laws,” Haradinaj said.
The draft law was adopted on first reading, while Haradinaj hopes the deputies will also approve it in the second vote.
“I know it passed the first reading, but I hope the deputies, on behalf of the people and citizens they represent, as well as all those protesting, not only in Pristina’s square but everywhere in the world, will have the historic opportunity to vote on it today,” Haradinaj said.
The former commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army added that, apart from the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo, no other institution could overturn The Hague’s decision.
“In democracy, the vote is what determines the course of the process. There is no other credible institution, either globally or otherwise, besides the Parliament of Kosovo. If they do not vote, they will remain responsible and will have to answer to the citizens,” Haradinaj said.
Haradinaj stressed that there should be no party divisions because, in the end, Parliament, as the body with full authority within the meaning of its powers, makes the final decision.
According to him, only one item should have been on today’s agenda: approving the draft law.
“This session should have had only one item on its agenda, namely amending the laws on the specialized chambers, and nothing else. Any intervention or attempt to go beyond that further exceeds the moral act of a credible institution, which is Parliament,” Haradinaj concluded.
The legislative amendments concerning the Specialized Chambers prompted protests in front of the Parliament building throughout the day.
Today, the draft law amending and supplementing the Law on the Specialized Chambers and the Office of the Specialized Prosecutor was adopted on first reading in Kosovo’s Parliament with 91 votes in favor and none against.
Several other draft laws were also adopted during the same session.
