The idea of ending the war through dialogue with Russia has sparked a broad debate in Ukraine.

While some politicians are calling for peace talks to begin, opponents of this approach warn that any concessions to Moscow could undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.

Member of Parliament Oleksiy Honcharenko has raised the possibility of negotiations on sensitive issues, including Ukraine’s neutrality, NATO membership, sanctions and the status of Donbas.

Danilo Hetmancev, a representative of the governing party, has also said that negotiations should be placed at the top of the agenda. At the same time, Ihor Terehov, the mayor of Kharkiv, stressed that an agreement would make sense only if it were accompanied by concrete security guarantees.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has responded to these positions by calling for the preservation of national unity. He has warned that compromises must not lead to the weakening of Ukraine.

Ukrainian political scientists believe that the latest statements may reflect citizens’ war fatigue, concerns about a difficult winter and the efforts of some politicians to secure support ahead of the next elections. In their view, these positions may also be used to gauge public reaction to possible compromises with Russia.

A poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology shows that 75 percent of Ukrainians favor negotiations with Russia, while 21 percent oppose them.

However, the fact that a majority supports dialogue does not mean that Ukrainians are ready to accept Moscow’s terms. The main challenge remains finding a solution that halts the fighting while also protecting the country’s sovereignty and future.
