The Holy Father made the news public during the Sunday Angelus prayer, addressing the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square from the window of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican.

According to the Pope, the growth is well-defined, and doctors have determined that it should be surgically removed. He said he had decided to follow their advice and that the operation would take place soon.

No further details have yet been made public about Leo XIV’s diagnosis or the surgical procedure he will undergo.

During his address, the Pope also shared a message about the importance of doing good, even when good deeds are not understood or appreciated by others.

He stressed that the kindness people offer may be misinterpreted or rejected, but that this should not, in his view, be a reason for discouragement.

Leo XIV emphasized that the joy conveyed by the Church is not feigned, but deep, tangible and real. It is connected to everyday life, work, smiles, tears, handshakes and acts of kindness.

In closing, the Holy Father described this joy as a gift from God for the salvation of the world.
