“President Zelensky can rely on Germany and Europe in this situation. We stand by Ukraine and will continue to cooperate within the framework of the European Union with the aim of a just and lasting peace that will preserve both Ukraine’s freedom and Europe’s security,” said the German chancellor.
As for the agreement on oil exports between Washington and Moscow, Merz assessed that “such a decision is unimaginable for Germany and Europe.” According to him, “Russia will negotiate seriously only under pressure, and this is why we are maintaining our sanctions against Russia.”
The head of the German government also added that “after Moscow’s merciless attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, we must strengthen them.”
Merz spoke one day after Donald Trump made it known on Friday that he had reached an understanding with Vladimir Putin to channel additional quantities of Russian oil into international markets.
According to announcements from the American side, Russia has committed to providing immediately over 300,000 tons, then another 500,000 tons during November, and one million tons in December.
The American president did not rule out the possibility of an additional quantity of three million tons at a later stage, provided that certain requirements are met.
Based on Trump’s statements, the total amount exceeds 4.8 million tons, although the exact delivery times, trading conditions, and final buyers have not been made known.
