Italian media report that the carabinieri operation came after calls from several residents, who had reported that an individual had climbed over the fence of a private residence, with the suspicion that he was attempting to pave the way for a burglary.
The unit dispatched to the scene found the 39-year-old in a state of agitation, and according to initial information, he was shouting. The law enforcement forces decided to restrain him and held him pinned to the ground.
It was precisely at this moment that the young man suffered cardiac arrest. The officers reacted immediately by administering first aid measures and using the defibrillator, in an attempt to restore the function of his heart.
Afterwards, the man was rushed with extraordinary speed to the hospital of Lodi. However, the doctors’ efforts did not yield results and after several hours he was pronounced dead.
So far, it has not been made clear what the exact reasons were that provoked the sudden deterioration of his health.
The investigation has been left in the hands of the Lodi Prosecutor’s Office, which will work to build the full picture of what happened during the carabinieri’s operation.
As part of the investigative procedure, testimonies have been taken from the officers involved in the operation, while the acquisition of recordings from the 112 emergency center has also been requested.
At this moment, no official conclusion has been provided regarding the exact causes of the 39-year-old’s death.
The investigations are expected to shed light on the circumstances of the cardiac arrest and to verify whether all the proper protocols were followed by the law enforcement forces during the intervention.
