MP Tabaku after inspection at Reç prison: Justifications for changes to the Criminal Procedure Code are not supported by the figures

Out of a total of 225 people in pre-trial detention at the Reç institution, only 10 of them are charged with offenses related to organized crime and corruption.

These figures were brought to light by the Chairwoman of the Committee on Human Rights and Media, Jorida Tabaku, who conducted a monitoring visit to this prison.

The MP was critical of the majority’s reasoning regarding the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code, especially concerning the security measure “imprisonment.”

According to her, confronting organized crime and corruption requires continuous political commitment, a factor she considers one of Albania’s fundamental challenges on the path to European integration.

During the stay at Reç prison, committee members, accompanied by representatives of the Albanian Helsinki Committee, the People’s Advocate, and the OSCE, were informed about the detention conditions and the treatment of persons in pre-trial detention.

The monitoring process will extend to other penitentiary units and will conclude with the drafting of a report, which will include the problems identified and recommendations for interventions in legislation.
