Vance begins positioning himself for the post-Trump era: War with Iran cost us in the elections, focus turns to 2028

The Republicans’ defeat in the U.S. midterm elections has prompted discussions about the future direction of the Republican Party and the MAGA movement after Donald Trump.

Against this backdrop, Vice President J.D. Vance weighed in with criticism of the war’s impact on the election result, while presenting ideas for winning back voters’ support. According to a CNN analysis, he is seeking a greater role in leading the Republican camp and positioning himself for the race expected to take place ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

The difference between Trump’s and Vance’s positions became apparent after the result was announced. Trump appeared at the White House, where he observed work on the new ballroom, while the vice president published an open assessment of the reasons for the defeat.

Vance attributed a significant part of the result to the war in Iran, but acknowledged that the administration had failed to convincingly explain its economic message to the public. In his view, the conflict and its economic consequences had increased voter dissatisfaction.

“The reason we lost is the war,” Vance wrote, referring to the conflict and rising fuel prices. He also said Republicans had failed to effectively communicate their economic message at a time when Americans were facing a high cost of living.

The vice president suggested revisiting some of the party’s priorities, including enforcement of immigration policy. Under his proposal, more attention should be paid to businesses that illegally employ immigrants.

Vance said he had sought advice from an experienced pollster on how Republicans could win back disappointed voters. The discussion identified four priority areas: ending the war, curbing inflation and rising prices, restoring the “America First” doctrine, and reviewing U.S. relations with Israel.

Trump, for his part, did not indicate that he regretted the military intervention. The president said he would not have acted differently and described the conflict as a necessary decision, despite its political cost and impact on fuel prices.

However, he acknowledged that Vance might be right about the war’s impact on the election result, as it had caused a short-term increase in gasoline prices. CNN notes that the two interpret this cost differently: Trump considers it a necessary sacrifice, while Vance wants the conflict to be taken into account when shaping the Republican Party’s future strategy.

The vice president’s statements also signal his growing alignment with the more isolationist wing of MAGA, which opposes American involvement in conflicts abroad. According to CNN, references to the “America First” doctrine and the need to review relations with Israel are linked to Vance’s efforts to build alliances within the conservative camp.

Commentator Tucker Carlson also wields influence in this wing and has opposed U.S. military interventions abroad. Vance, however, faces a political contradiction: he himself was part of the negotiating team for an agreement with Tehran intended to end the conflict, but the effort failed.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has also entered the debate over the Republicans’ future. He called the election result a blow that could have long-term consequences for the party.

In a post on the social network X, DeSantis warned that Republicans might not regain control of the Senate until 2032. He described the result as approaching “levels of political extinction” and underscored the importance of Texas to the party’s electoral prospects.

According to CNN, the reactions from Vance and DeSantis show that the race for the future leadership of the Republican Party is taking shape. The defeat in the midterm elections has accelerated debates about the post-Trump period, while 2028, when Americans will elect a new president, is being seen as the main point of conflict within the Republican camp.
